Large Willy Guhl Handkerchief Planter, c. 1960s
Inquire to purchase
This mid-century sculptural concrete folded bowl, crafted in France or Italy in the 1960s, features an expressive star-like silhouette created through a draped, hand-formed concrete technique. The sweeping, pulled corners and soft undulations give the piece a dynamic, almost fabric-like motion—an incredible contrast to the weight and solidity of its material.
The surface has developed a beautiful natural patina: warm oxidation, mineral veining, and weathering that soften the dramatic geometry and add tremendous character. Part brutalist, part organic, the form sits somewhere between sculpture and vessel.
Wide and low, this piece is ideal as a statement planter for cascading plantings, a sculptural bowl in a garden vignette, or a standalone art object indoors or out. Its presence is unmistakably mid-century, yet it feels timeless and modern.
