Refractory Crucible Planter, c. 1970s
Inquire to purchase
This 1970s Northern California refractory crucible planter began its life as a high-heat industrial vessel, crafted to endure the extreme temperatures of metalworking and glass production. Formed from dense refractory ceramic, the surface developed a dramatic, volcanic texture—rich with pitting, mineral buildup, and organic irregularities that make each crucible entirely unique.
Decades of oxidation have produced a stunning palette of charcoal, verdigris greens, coppery undertones, and subtle iridescence. The tall, cylindrical form gives the piece a sculptural, almost monolithic presence—an ideal vessel for expressive plantings such as caudex specimens, euphorbia, bonsai, or any plant that benefits from an architectural base.
Industrial crucibles from this period have become highly collectible design objects, valued for their brutalist honesty and accidental artistry. These Northern California examples are especially strong, each with its own character and beautifully aged patina.
